As a Discover Birth educator/doula you will:
- Promote a woman’s natural ability to birth her baby
- Use an evidence-based approach, providing clients with current research on each topic (regardless of your personal views)
- Allow and encourage clients to choose what is right for them
- Be compliant with the World Health Organization code on Breastmilk substitutes (see http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf)
- Use appropriate language in all discussions with clients (proper terminology, unbiased approach, and neutral tone
- Promote Discover Birth in a positive light, and professionally represent the organization in your role of “front-line” staff
- Only provide information or support which is within your scope of practice
- Dress appropriately (see binder section on suggestions)
Philosophical Approach
As a Discover Birth educator/doula you agree that:
- Birth is a normal and healthy process
- Women’s bodies are designed to birth their babies
- A woman’s support people are critical in the birth process and can impact both positively and negatively
- Birth can safely take place in a variety of locations, including hospital, home, and birth centers
- Breastmilk is the ideal food for babies
- Skin-to-skin contact between moms and babies is critical to bonding and an enhanced relationship
